Before They Forget: Recognizing and Maximizing the Spiritual Possibilities of Alzheimer's (CD)
$29.95
+ S/H
After a person is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, new spiritual dimensions emerge. When identified and described, these dimensions can offer possibilities for the patient and caregivers to deepen their connections with each other and live life more fully before the loss of memory permanently transforms the relationship. Sharing stories, reflections, and insights from her work with hospice patients and parishioners, Dr. Rusnak opens the door to a deeper look at the spiritual world of Alzheimer's.

Caring for the Caregiver: A Spiritual Approach for the Professional (Book)

$9.95 + S/H

The task of being a caregiver includes having to cope with present losses, recurrent losses that occur over an extended period of time and grief that is in anticipation of future losses or death. Long time caregivers are thus inundated with loss and grief which can lead to emotional and physical exhaustion. But, caregiving can include so much more. It is possible for caregivers to cope, care and to still create a good life. Three spiritual attributes that add depth and richness to the caregiver's world will be discussed and illustrated. Through concepts of self-love, empathy and hospitality, caregivers can find the inner strength, joy and community to live a fuller life.

When I give this lecture as part of an online course for professional caregivers, they too express their own lack of awareness of the spiritual journey that caregivers are thrown into. They are moved by the metaphors that name various dimensions of their journey; and they acknowledge their own need to be aware of them in order to care for the caregivers with empathy, compassion and support.

After They Forget: The Thriving Spirit of Alzheimer's
A frequent sentiment of many professional and family caregivers is that persons with advanced Alzheimer's disease have “lost the essence of who they are”. This belief can lead to a decrease in desire, time and energy caregivers invest with patients who "will not remember I was there anyway," or in whose lives "I cannot make any difference anyway." Dr. Rusnak will take a deep look into the concept of personhood that supports this view and give examples of its moral, ethical and social consequences in history. She will offer thought-provoking alternative views of personhood that challenge participants into a deeper and more spiritual analysis of human nature and worth. Using stories with Alzheimer's patients that illustrate this alternative view of personhood, Dr. Rusnak will offer the caregiver a novel look into a world where an enhanced respect for the cognitively impaired can result in a mutuality and wholeness between caregiver and patient neither would have experienced otherwise.

Choosing Hope at the End of Life
At the end of life, many patients express hope for the impossible. They hope to escape death. Hospice caregivers also struggle with the notion of hope in the face of their own certain death and seek clarity for their own lives and for their patients. Using various disciplines, reflection and story, this presentation will explore what hope is, how it functions, the natural context in which it is born and nourished, its allies and its enemies. Hospice caregivers can learn to educate and empower their patients to choose hope.

Loss, Grief and Faith
Mourners who believe in God often deny themselves the natural response to loss. For others, the death of a loved one can prompt a deep crisis in faith. This presentation will help you, the professional caregiver, when faced with mourning clients whose grief raises faith dilemmas. Professional caregivers who have a religious faith must suspend their own belief/faith assumptions to be of help.

Appearances: Paranormal Experiences at the End of Life and in Bereavement

It is not reasonable or scientifically provable; yet, the very last experiences of the dying are that of deceased loved ones returning, or angels emerging, to accompany him or her safely into death and into life after. The newly departed then often reappear to the bereaved to give them assurance, strength and purpose to go on. What is this phenomenon, this spiritual terrain our loved ones enter into at the end of life? What can these experiences teach us about the possibilities in the spiritual terrain of the living? Drawing on her work with the dying and bereaved in hospice and on her theological and spiritual reflections and insights, Dr. Rusnak will explore these questions and more.
